On March 25, 2008 Engine Company 23 and Ambulance 23 were dispatched to 44610 Waxpool Road for an auto accident with a report of vehicle on its side with three patients. Upon arrival RE-23 advised Loudoun that one patient was trapped and to add Rescue Engine 6 and Medic 6. Rescue Chief 6 arrived on scene and assumed command. ER-6 arrived on scene to find one mini-van on its side with one trapped. The crew stabilized, cut the A, B, C, and D posts, and flapped the roof allowing the patient to be removed. While the crew from the Rescue Engine was working, Medic 6 contacted Med Control and requested a fly out. Engine 23 cleared the scene and established the LZ at Red Rum drive. The patient was transported via Medic 6 to Aircare 6 at the LZ. Crews began to clean up and returned to service shortly after.

Past Chief Passes Away
Mr. Eamich was born in Waterford, Virginia June 1, 1920 and died at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV on March 3, 2008.
He served in the U.S. Army 12 Airborne Squadron in World War 11 and was stationed in the South Pacific.
Walt Eamich retired from Arlington County School Board as a plumber in 1985.
He graduated from Waterford High School in 1937 and was the only male in his graduating class. (a males dream I'm sure.:-))
Walt Eamich joined the of the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department Feb. 1, 1959 he served as Chief in 1964 and again from 1970 through 1975. He remained very active from 1959 till the mid 90s. In 1971, Chief, Walton B Eamich, Sr. was instrumental in the start of a Junior Fire Department for young men 15 through 17 years of age. Of the 50 years that Walt Eamich has served with the Ashburn Volunteer Fire Department he served as Chief for a total of 7 years and as Assistant Chief for a total of 12 years along with a number of other leadership positions. During his reign as Chief, he organized monthly training drills, thus vastly improving the training and safety within the department. He instituted several progressive training programs while overseeing the upgrading of the departments fire equipment. He strongly believed in teaching the members to REMEMBER THE BASICS. He was also instrumental in upgrading the gear. For "his example of high standards and devotion to duty", Walt was presented in 1991 with the Loudoun County Chamber of Commerce Meritorious Service Award. He was presented with the Loudoun County Fire Service Hall of Fame Award in 2003 for "his exceptional and distinguished service to the citizens of Loudoun County Virginia."
He was a man who believed in doing things right the first time, he did not like to be idle he was always doing something. He would do anything in the world for you but was to proud to ask for help himself. He was the type that you give you the shirt off his back if you ask his and even if you didn't if he would still give it to you if he thought you needed it.

Units go to Sterling (Again) for the house next door
Thursday February 29 units from Sterling, Ashburn, Fairfax and Dulles responded for the townhouse fire on Oak Grove in company 11s area. Sterling units marked on scene with heavy fire showing in the rear with extension to all 3 floors. Units on scene tried to make an aggressive interior attack with no success. Due to the amount of fire command ordered a second alarm and sounded the evacuation tones. Thus an exterior attack was initiated to contain the fire. Units worked on scene for approximately 3 hours overhauling and mopping up. This was the second fire on Oak Grove in 8 days.

The loss of a friend
It is with great sadness that the Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department announces the passing of Firefighter Ricky Muth. The untimely death of Ricky is a tragic loss to all of us and we are all deeply saddened with the news we received this morning. Our hearts and our hands go out to the Muth family in their time of need.
On a personal note, this is the hardest entry I have ever had to make. Ricky was a friend of mine. He was the guy that showed me the ropes, took me under his wing and taught me many valuable lessons when I was just a probie. I will never forget all the good times we had running calls together and all the good times we had around the station. You will be missed.
