Yes. Many of our volunteers balance careers, school, and family responsibilities while volunteering. We offer multiple ways to serve depending on your availability.

Time commitments vary by role. Operational members often work overnight duty shifts from 6 PM to 6 AM and may spend additional time in training. Administrative volunteers generally have more flexible schedules.

Potential members must: Complete an application Pass a background check Be voted in as a member by the Board of Directors Complete a physical examination Participate in onboarding and training Maintain an active level of participation

Applicants must generally be high school graduates and at least 18 years old. Junior members ages 16 or 17 may be considered for operational membership if they reside in Loudoun County and are currently enrolled in the EMT program at the Academies of Loudoun.

No prior experience is required. AVFRD provides training for firefighters, EMTs, and administrative members. We welcome individuals from all backgrounds who are willing to learn and serve the community.

Ashburn Volunteer Fire & Rescue Department is a volunteer-driven fire and rescue organization serving the Ashburn and Loudoun County community since 1944. AVFRD operates as part of the Loudoun County combined fire and rescue system and responds to more than 9,500 emergency calls annually.
