An Ashburn man who was hit by a vehicle last week has died from his injuries, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

John A. Schloegel, 83, was walking his bicycle across a crosswalk when he was struck by the driver of a 2016 Toyota Camry traveling eastbound on Gloucester Parkway.

Schloegel died on Saturday. The driver, August L. Amurao, 55, of Ashburn, was charged with reckless driving.

Supervisor Ron Meyer (R-Broad Run) said he knew Schloegel.

"He was working with our office on our efforts to accelerate the construction of a traffic signal at this intersection," Meyer said. "This accident breaks my heart, and he is in my personal prayers."

Meyer said the Virginia Department of Transportation has held up the construction of a traffic signal at the intersection.
