How to Become a Junior Member of the AVFRD

The Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department (AVFRD) offers a limited number of Junior Operational Member positions open to candidates aged 16-17. Junior Operational Members get the same fire and EMS experience as our senior members and must follow the same training and certification requirements as other members.

Training

Junior members must enroll in Loudoun County Firefighting or EMT-B classes and achieve certification within their first year. This requires a significant time commitment: typically three evenings per week, a full Saturday every other week, plus additional study time.

Duty Crew

Junior Operational Members participate weekly with their assigned crew from 6pm – 10pm with an occasional Saturday rotation. Members will respond to 911 calls and train on crew.

Expectations

  • Multi-Year Commitment: Training, equipping, and supporting a junior firefighter or EMT is time-consuming and costly to our publicly funded organization. This is not a short-term experience but a long-term commitment to service and personal growth.
  • Maturity: Junior Operational Members will be exposed to difficult situations, traumatic scenes, and rigorous training. They must be able to handle the pressure of volunteering.
  • Academics: Junior Members must maintain a 2.0 or better GPA, not fail any class, and must provide their report card at the time of application and at the end of each grading period.

Applications

Participation in the Junior Operational Member program is competitive, with priority given to candidates who bring one or more of the following:

  • Prior Fire or EMS certification.
  • Plans to stay in the area following high school graduation.
  • AVFRD Cadet Program participants who excelled in the program.

Non-Operational Junior Members
